Orienting with Overhead Pins – An Exploratory Study Towards the Design of Part Feeders

چکیده
This paper introduces aspects of an innovative method towards the development of a hybrid part orienter. Focusing on the principle of minimalism, we investigate the use of overhead pins of various classes over a slow moving conveyor to orient polygonal planar parts. We implement a simple planner that yields sequences of static passive pins to orient a given part from a random initial state to a final orientation set. We also encounter cases in which a single final orientation is not found, and thus, we introduce the use of a force/torque sensor (static active pin) to help distinguish between the possible orientations and be able to tell which results. Limitations in orienting parts with overhead pins exist due to the complexity of the problem. Therefore, the purpose of our work is to serve as an initial study towards developing a part feeder that uses a new class of orienting devices, such as overhead pins.

This paper presents a novel sensor-based flexible part orienting system based on the commonly available force/torque sensor. The system orients planar parts arriving on a conveyor belt via a sequence parts into a completed item. Stage (i) is often done with a vibratory bowl feeder. Bowl feeders are a widely accepted method of orienting parts; however, they must be manually redesigned for each n...

متن کاملCurved Fences for Part Alignment
In automated packing or assembly it is often necessary to bring randomly oriented parts into uniform alignment. Mechanical methods such as vibratory bowl feeders are often used for this purpose, although there is no theory for the systematic design of such feeders. A slanted “fence” attached to the stationary sides of a conveyor belt is also capable of orienting a stream of parts and a sequence...
متن کاملParts Orienting with Shape Uncertainty
Parts manufactured to tolerances have shape variations. Most work in robotic manipulation assumes that part shape does not vary. Orienting devices such as bowl feeders frequently fail due to variations in part shape. In this paper we develop techniques to orient parts with shape uncertainty. We present a shape uncertainty model and describe the nondeterminism in parts orienting that arises from...

Parts manufactured to tolerances have variations in shape. Most previous work in robotic manipulation assumes that parts do not have shape variations. We study the effects of uncertainty in part shape on orienting to develop systems that can orient toleranced polygonal parts. We present a tolerance model in which...
